Common Core State Standards for Math and English Language Arts
Standards by Design from ODE
Create a list of your content area standards
- Parse the standards - break them down into their simplest form.
- Determine the Bloom level of each parsed standard.
- Cluster the parsed standards into themes or units in which they would be addressed during the course of the year - on butcher paper
- Gap fill for scaffolding purposes - if the standard is a Bloom's level 3 (Applying), what level 1 (Remember) & level 2 (Understand) activities will your students complete first.
- Create a Unit Preparation Worksheet, addressing all 6 levels of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy - what standards are addressed, what activities will students complete, develop rubrics, and what resources will be required. - Develop Rubric worksheet for Student Portfolio with Response to Interventions on back to be used as needed. The worksheet will be kept in a portfolio for graduation requirements.

Create a list of your content area standards
Break down each standard into its simplest form. Look at the standard and see how many tasks are required AND determine where each task falls on Bloom's Taxonomy.
Let's look at the ELA Reading Standard Grade 11-12 Standard #1"Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain."
This can be broken in two parts:
Make a Post-It note for each parsed standard
Let's look at the ELA Reading Standard Grade 11-12 Standard #1"Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain."
This can be broken in two parts:
- Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly (Bloom's #2)
- Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what inferences drawn from the text (Bloom's #3)
Make a Post-It note for each parsed standard
After parsing the standards onto Post-It notes, place the Post-It notes into themes/units in which you would address the standards in class. Also, place them in order of their position of Bloom's Taxonomy.
Here is an example of the parsed standards for English 11-12 as provided by Lauren Hernandez:
These are color-coded by Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Writing, and Speaking & Listening

You can see that the parsed standards address a lot of Bloom's level 3, 4, and 5, but not levels 1 & 2. We will need to back fill in activities that cover Remembering (1) and Understanding (2) before we should assess for a standard that is a Applying (3), Analyzing (4) and Evaluating (5).
